The idea that the Fire Nation was stealing the ability to self-govern from earthbenders became more popular. While some political thinkers in Ba Sing Se were entertaining the idea that maybe the King has some sort of obligation to protect the provinces from the invaders, it was the refugees from the provinces who helped spread this sentiment. The push for the Royal Army (armed forces of Ba Sing Se) to become involved in the conflict arose from a selfish sense of self-preservation rather than an obligation to the Earth Kingdom as a whole. It eventually became apparent that he intended to conquer all of the Earth Kingdom, and some in Ba Sing Se began to doubt the wall’s ability to keep him out. The turning point came when Azulon broke his promises (regarding a cessation of Fire Nation expansion) of 20ASC in 40ASC and reignited the conflict. The Fire Nation’s invasion was unprecedented, and no-one knew what to think. To be fair, this is how other provinces thought as well. In our world, there’s a difference between civil war and war between two nation-states – but the Hundred Year War was the first war between nations of different bending types ever. The Fire Nation’s invasion was viewed as somewhat similar to an inter-provincial conflict – something which Ba Sing Se usually didn’t concern itself with. What’s particularly indicative of the thinking in Ba Sing Se is that any action that was being entertained was considered “intervention” on their part. When Sozin began his invasion, most people of importance still didn’t really see it as their concern. Ba Sing Se had the capacity to organise the Earth Kingdom against the Fire Nation, while the provinces were barely able to cooperate with each other.īa Sing Se didn’t care about provincial matters before the war. This seems a reasonable place to launch an assessment of the attitudes of nobles and officials in Ba Sing Se on the war.īa Sing Se, despite being the most reclusive province, was also the most important province.

In a previous post I outlined how Chin the Conqueror increased the disconnect between Ba Sing Se and the provinces.
